Ms. Bela is an extraordinarily dedicated educator who has served our school since 1988. She has guided generations of students—including children of her former students—and is appreciated for her admirable devotion and lasting impact. Originally from India, she has lived in Maryland for over 50 years and speaks English, Bangla, and some Hindi. After decades of full-time teaching, Ms. Bela now returns three mornings per week to work with our third-year and Kindergarten students on reading and writing. Her visits are a true highlight for the children, who have affectionately titled these days as “Ms. Bela Days.” She teaches with care and joy, and is especially passionate about materials like the moveable alphabet and metal insets, which help build confidence and independence through literacy.

 Ms. Bela enjoys visiting with her children and grandchildren, reading, gardening, baking, and volunteering--she has been a summer volunteer at Holy Cross Hospital’s Adult Day Care for over 20 years. Her presence continues to be a treasured part of our school community, and she often refers to SBMA as her second home.
